Gateway teachers will start the school year with an updated contract and an incoming 1 percent raise after a long period of negotiations.

“It took us two years to do it,” said Mark Spinola, Gateway teacher and union president. “I am pleased, members are pleased with the agreement, and we look forward to getting the school year started.”

The three-year accord awards teachers and professional staff step increases in their pay scales and 1 percent raises in school years 2018-19 and 2019-20. There were no percentage increases for the 2017-18 school year, only step increases.

“We are very pleased that the diligence and commitment of both the Gateway Education Association and the Gateway School District have resulted in a collective bargaining agreement that will serve the interests of our teachers, our students, our schools and our community through the 2019-20 school year,” Gateway Superintendent Bill Short said in a prepared statement.

The union voted to approve the contract Aug. 10. The school board voted unanimously to approve the agreement Aug. 14. There was no discussion.

Spinola said the union vote was not unanimous and would not publicly disclose the tally between roughly 260 members.

Mary Beth Cirucci, school board vice president and negotiations committee chair, said she is excited to now tackle other issues in the district.

Contract talks began in January 2017, and the contract expired in August 2017. Gateway then hired an adviser in January to help with negotiations.

In March, union members overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if contract talks continued to sputter.

The state Labor Relations Board appointed a fact-finder to spur along talks in July.
