Swim season ends with canine friends in Monroeville
Local swimmers closed out the summer with a little doggie paddling at Monroeville Community Pool.
The municipality’s Labor Day dog swim tradition continued this year with about 30 furry friends and their families.
“We’ve been having this dog swim for at least 23 years,” pool manager Jennifer Antonucci said. “We have at least 25 to 50 plus dogs come every summer. We have residents and nonresidents that come from all over Pittsburgh just to have fun with their dogs and swim with their families.”
The dog swim lasted for a little less than an hour. The community pool, also known as Bel-Aire pool, is located at 1100 Abers Creek Road.
Steven and Ali Prugar brought Geno, a 1-year-old border collie, German shepherd and terrier mix.
The Murrysville couple had to do some coaxing for a quick dip.
“He’s not a big fan of water so far,” Steven Prugar said about Geno. “We have some pretty good aspirations that he’ll like it once he’s in. We’ll definitely find out here soon.”
Golden retrievers Chance and Tucker, both 3, splashed about with their owners Mary and Rob Wilkinson of Monroeville.
“I have two retrievers that don’t know how to swim very well,” Rob Wilkinson said. “It’s a blast. We look forward to this every year.”
Mary Wilkinson said this year marked their 10th time at the dog swim.
“We love it,” she said. “It’s so much fun for the boys that this is available for them to do.”
Nugget, an 11-month-old Vizsla, drank from the mushroom waterfall in the baby pool. He and Betty, a 1-year-old labradoodle, belong to husband and wife Nate and Emily Kistler of Pittsburgh.
It was their fifth time at the dog swim, the first with both dogs.
“It’s a really great way to end the summer,” Nate Kistler said.
