Runners in the 2014 'Beat the Heat' 5K head off from the starting line. This year's 5K will take place Aug. 18, 2018, at a new location: Murrysville Community Park.

The 16th annual Beat the Heat 5K, hosted by the Franklin Regional Soccer Boosters, has a new location, taking place this year at Murrysville Community Park.

“The municipality has been wanting to take more advantage of MCP,” said boosters President Kurt Kimmich. “And also we want to try and inconvenience as few residents as possible.”

Additionally, 5K organizers were not sure whether Sloan Elementary School — where the event has started and ended in the past — would be under construction as part of the Franklin Regional School District’s proposed elementary campus project.

It will kick off at 8 a.m. Aug. 18 at the Rotary Miracle Field Sports Complex in the park.

The 5K will begin at the Miracle Field complex and head up the hill onto Wiestertown and Farm roads before looping back toward the park.

“It’s a great course, and we’re really going to be able to incorporate the Miracle Field, which part of the proceeds will go to,” Kimmich said. “My wife and I have been involved with them for several years because of our youngest son, who has Down syndrome.”

Awards will go to the top male and female overall finishers, to first through third place in the 19-and-under age group, and first and second place in the 20-and-over age group. Following the awards, prizes will be given out to registered participants through random drawings.

In addition, this year’s event will feature a Chinese auction basket raffle, which both participants and spectators can purchase tickets to win.

“I’m really excited about it,” Kimmich said.

Registration is $20 before Aug. 5, and $25 after. T-shirts are guaranteed to everyone who registers by Aug. 5.
