Irwin residents and businesses will be paying slightly more for garbage collection beginning in September.

Council this week approved raising the residential rates to $57.03 per month, from $55.37, effective Sept. 1. The commercial rates rose to $60.15 per month, from $59.37. The rates will remain the same until Aug. 31, 2018.

Council President John Cassandro said the increase was necessary because Waste Management, the borough's hauler, was increasing the rates it charges the borough.

Council also set the salary for the new assistant manager, Shari Martino, 37, of North Huntingdon, at $32,000. She will receive 10 days of vacation and five sick days.

She began her new position on Sept. 5 after being hired at a special meeting last month.
