Police in Sydney made 15 arrests in a series of riots that flared in a low-income neighborhood throughout the weekend. Dozens of riot police continued patrolling the area called Macquarie Fields Monday as investigators worked to identify the person responsible for setting off the mayhem Friday night, when a stolen car crashed into a crowd of people, killing two. The arrests include a 15-year-old girl charged for allegedly assaulting a female police officer, while there were also arrests for possession of firearms and police batons, the Australian Broadcasting Corp., reported. The police were moving through the area in a tight straight line formation, prompting calls to local radio stations by people complaining the police were inciting more violence by being heavy-handed. Acting police Assistant Commissioner Dennis Clifford told the network he believed the number of troublemakers was small. "I firmly believe that the people we're dealing with are the minority out here," he said. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
