16-year-old charged as adult in attempted homicide of 2 men on Marshall-Shadeland street
A teenager from Pittsburgh's Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood will go to trial on two counts of attempted murder because police said he critically wounded a man and risked killing another in early May.
Daniel Mowry, 16, was arrested May 7 and charged as an adult with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and gun charges. Police said he shot Ryan Myers, 30, inside a car parked on Rothpletz Street in Marshall-Shadeland.
Mowry had walked up to the parked car and asked Myers and his passenger if they wanted to buy marijuana. When they declined, Mowry pulled a gun and demanded their belongings, Myers testified Friday at Mowry's preliminary hearing before Allegheny County Magisterial District Judge Ron Costa, Sr.
“I was going to give him both my wallet and my phone,” said Myers, still wearing bandages on his arm and neck after his discharge Thursday from Allegheny General Hospital. “I didn't have a chance before he started shooting.”
Myers said his passenger reached over to start the car and put it into gear just before Mowry fired about five shots into the car and fled. Myers was struck four times in the abdomen; he said two of the bullets are still in him.
Mowry was arrested later that evening when he returned to the shooting scene. He walked right past police tape and detectives collecting evidence. A surprised witness said, “That's him right there,” and officers detained Mowry.
Assistant District Attorney Melissa Byrnes added a second charge each of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and robbery related to the passenger in the car, and illegal possession of a firearm because Mowry had previously been adjudicated delinquent in juvenile court for possessing a firearm and was legally barred from possessing a gun after that.
Costa ordered all the charges held against Mowry, whose formal arraignment was scheduled for July 22.
