Two fifth-grade students at a Pittsburgh elementary school will be cited for bringing pellet guns to school, a district spokeswoman said Wednesday.

According to a letter sent home to parents Monday, several witnesses told staff members that the two students brought pellet airsoft guns to Pittsburgh Minadeo PreK-5 on Lilac Street in Squirrel Hill on Friday.

Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the two students are facing school-based discipline and citations for tumultuous behavior. She did not identify the students.

School staff confiscated the guns, Principal Melissa Wagner wrote in the letter.

“Although pellet airsoft guns are non-lethal replica guns that shoot plastic pellets, they are considered a weapon,” Wagner wrote. She urged parents to talk to their children about informing adults about questionable situations and making sure that children do not have access to weapons.
