Two members of the Greensburg Civil Service Commission have been reappointed.

City council has named Dr. Robert Tymoczko and Ronald Silvis, a retired Greensburg Salem administrator, to three-year terms. Tymoczko's term will expire in June 2007, and Silvis' term will expire in July 2007.

The city's recreation board also has a new member.

Daniel McCarty of Meadowbrook Avenue was appointed to replace Dale Hutchinson, for a term that will expire in February.

McCarty is the men's soccer and golf coach at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, where he also serves as the associate athletic director.

Parking ban planned

Motorists accustomed to parking along a section of the southbound lane of Highland Avenue in Greensburg will have to find another place to leave their cars.

City council has introduced a bill that would ban curbside parking in the portion of the southbound lane from 1046 Highland Ave. to the entrance to Scott Electric Co.

Police Chief Walter Lyons said there are no homes along that side of Highland Avenue, so it is likely that nonresidents are parking along the street.

Council is expected to vote on the proposed ordinance at its August meeting.

In the network

Greensburg plans to join a multi-county effort focusing on traffic and highway safety.

City council agreed to take part in the Neighborhood Safety Network Inc., of Washington, Pa., a regional comprehensive highway safety program.

Greensburg will apply to PennDOT to fund the safety programs. The city will serve as a conduit for program funding from Oct. 1 to September 2005.

The organization conducts traffic safety and highway safety programs throughout Westmoreland, Washington and Fayette counties.

150 candles

Penn Township will celebrate its 150th anniversary Aug. 12-14, 2005.

The committee planning the event is looking for residents to help put together a sesquicentennial celebration.

Interested parties may call Commissioner Michael Ginsburg at 412-372-6289 or send e-mail to: comfive@comcast.net

Penn Township, officially referred to as the Township of Penn, was named after Pennsylvania's founder, William Penn. Incorporated on Feb. 23, 1855, it was the 22nd township organized in Westmoreland County.

Smooth streets ahead

Penn Township commissioners have decided to place paving Franklin, Edwards and Center Streets at the top of the priority list for Community Development Block Grants in 2005.

Slope stabilization on Bratkovich Road was placed second, and construction of a ramp at the Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission building in Level Green was third.

Community Development Block Grants provide financial and technical assistance in community and economic development efforts. The county awards CDBG funds to eligible municipalities every three years.

The grant money is used for economic development, public improvements and services, recreational facilities, housing rehabilitation and blight removal.

Founding father?

The Jeannette Area Historical Society is seeking information about James Chambers and the history of Jeannette Glass.

John Howard, the society's president, said Chambers and H. Sellers McKee founded the city of Jeannette. Howard hopes to write about Chambers' life in the historical society's newsletter.

Anyone with information may call Howard at 412-601-1235 or send e-mail to: howgraph@aol.com.

Land plans

The Penn-Trafford Area Recreation Commission has been awarded a grant of $16,000 from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The grant, which must be matched by local funding, will be used to develop a master site plan for nearly 21 acres of land adjacent to Sunrise Elementary School, off Government Road.

The commission acquired the land from the Penn-Trafford School District with the intent of developing a recreation area . The commission serves Penn Township and Penn and Trafford boroughs.
