2 staff members win awards

Two Daily Courier staffers were recognized in separate statewide contests for work performed in 2007.

Photographer John F. Brothers won a second-place photography award in the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors contest for a photo of a house fire in Springfield.

The photo appeared in the Dec. 26, 2007, edition of the Daily Courier.

Brothers has been a member of the Daily Courier staff for more than 20 years. He is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Connellsville Area High School. He currently is taking additional courses at the Art Institute.

Courier staff writer Michael Cope won second place in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association's Keystone Press Awards for news beat reporting.

The award recognized his coverage of Connellsville Police Department from January to December 2007.

Cope is a graduate of Duquesne University with a master's degree in corporate communication, and Waynesburg University, where he studied professional writing. He is a 1997 graduate of Frazier High School.

Cope has worked at the Courier for four years.

Brothers and Cope are past winners of PAPME and Keystone awards, respectively.
