DAYTON — Faith Houston, 17, of Templeton, was selected as the 2006 Dayton Fair Queen. Houston, daughter of Lawrence and Sandra Houston, was selected by a panel of three out-of-county judges from among five candidates yesterday.

Houston, a home school student, was asked to give a discourse on a subject picked at random: “Explain the importance of the family farm today.” She said small family farms build a strong family base and make families self reliant.

The 2006 Fair Princess was Gabriele Olinger, 6, of Dayton, the daughter of Tammy and Rob Olinger. She was selected from among 10 contestants. All fair princess contestants answered the question; Why should you go to the Dayton Fair?

The fair queen was presented with her crown and a bouquet of roses from outgoing fair queen, Tina Wilson. She also received a $250 scholarship. Last year’s fair princess, Madison Schultheis presented her crown and a bouquet of flowers to Olinger.

Fair Queen runner up was Kristin Hawkins who received a $50 savings bond. Fair spokesman James Chestnut said Houston is the 19th person to be selected fair queen since the competition was started in 1988. The Dayton Fair is celebrating its 126th year.
