6 is the number for the day

Today’s number is six, boys and girls.

OK, somebody watched way too much television as a child.

The point is sixes are the theme for three roster changes affecting fantasy teams.

  • The six shooter, Cubs reliever Antonio Alfonseca , pitched for the first time this season Monday.

    The six-fingered pitcher was the Cubs’ closer until he pulled a hamstring in spring training, but don’t expect to see him finishing games for Chicago any time soon.

    Alfonseca was shaky to begin with last season and now the Cubs are slowly working him back into the bullpen mix, and Joe Borowski has a hold on the job for now.

    Borowski is 1-0 with six saves. More importantly, he was very good in middle relief last year, going 4-4 with two saves and a 2.74 ERA, so the success isn’t coming from nowhere.

    Alfonseca could still be traded or move back into the job if Borowski falters, but for now his value is almost nonexistant.

  • The other set of six is the Kansas City Royals roatation. Manager Tony Pena announced that he’s going with a six-man rotation for at least the next two weeks, including Darrell May , Chris George , Jeremy Affeldt , Runelvys Hernandez , Miguel Asencio and Kyle Snyder .

    Most of this group has limited or no value except for Hernandez, who is 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA, and Affeldt, who is supposed to be the superior prospect but has been held back by blister problems.

    Drop everybody’s value even more with the six-man rotation. The limited work could make it harder for all six to stay sharp and it will definitely cut into their cumulative numbers because they are getting less work.

  • Throw in a six in the field, as in the shortstop on your lineup card. That is where Derek Jeter is expected to show up as early as Tuesday for the New York Yankees.

    Jeter’s return should be a big bonus to owners who were patient with him and make the best lineup in the majors even more dangerous. Just be careful. Jeter did not have the problem corrected by surgery and separated shoulders often pop out again.
