The theme for Tuesday's press conference announcing the summer lineup of concerts at the I.C. Light Amphitheatre and the Post-Gazette Pavilion at Star Lake was '2001: A Space Odyssey.'

It should have been 'That '70s Show.' Or maybe even 'Hair.'

Nostalgia lovers are in for a rock 'n' roll overdose, as announced yesterday at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, Downtown. Acts such as Crosby, Stills & Nash, Rod Stewart, The Allman Brothers, Chicago and Journey are among those slated to appear. If those bands aren't ancient enough, how about Tommy James, The Vogues and The Beach Boys• And for fans who really yearn for Bob Seger's 'old-time rock 'n' roll,' there's Fake Fest, an evening devoted to bands doing tributes to groups that are no longer around, including The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles.

Even Tommy Shaw of Styx showed up to help drum up interest in a season that has a haunting sense of deja vu.

According to Rich Engler, president of DiCesare Engler/SFX Music Pittsburgh, the roster is an indication that the music industry is struggling to find successors to The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, acts that are guaranteed to generate excitement among fans - and sell tickets.

'There's just not too many bands coming up that can fill large venues,' he said.

But Engler says he is excited about a few shows, especially The Vans Warped Tour (Aug. 2) with Rancid, and an Aug. 12 show with Aaron Neville, Toots & the Maytals and Steel Pulse.

Careful perusal of the announced lineup (which comprises about half of the concerts expected to come to the area) reveals some gems.

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band at I.C. Light (date to be announced), and James Taylor (July 26), John Mellencamp (Aug. 31) and ageless rockers Stewart (July 13) and Aerosmith (date to be announced), all at the P-G Pavilion, should provide interesting shows.

Country fans also have lots to choose from, especially The George Strait Country Music Festival on May 20 at the P-G Pavilion, which features Strait, Alan Jackson, Lonestar, Lee Ann Womack and Brad Paisley, among others.

Alternative rock concerts include Blink-182 (July 17) and Godsmack (date to be announced) at the P-G Pavilion. Also returning to the same venue is X-Fest on May 18, featuring Fuel, Staind, Everlast and local heroes The Clarks.

And what would the summer be without some shows for the teenybopper set• The Backstreet Boys will return to the area June 26 at the P-G Pavilion, with tickets going on sale Saturday. And Engler confirmed that N 'Sync is slated for a show at the Steelers' new stadium, with a date and ticket prices to be announced.
