A-K Valley roundup: Leechburg volleyball edges Riverview
Senior Lexie Young served the game-winning point in the fifth set and Leechburg secured a 3-2 win over Riverview in Section 4-A girls volleyball action Tuesday night.
Leechburg won the deciding game 15-12.
Carly George, Brooke Blumer and Mackenzie Fello all tallied six kills for Leechburg (3-1, 2-1). Ariel Rafferty had 16 kills, Harper Ercole added nine and setter Kate Davis finished with 31 assists for Riverview (2-2, 1-2).
Burrell 3, Deer Lakes 0 — Alaina York had 23 assists and five kills and Eliza Oswalt added 13 kills and five aces to lead Burrell (2-1, 2-1) to a Section 5-AA win.
St. Joseph 2, Winchester Thurston 1 — Jack Farrell scored a goal in the first half and Dom Ferrante scored the game-winner in the second as St. Joseph downed Section 2-A rival Winchester Thurston at Highmark Stadium. Vincenzo Schiano DiCola and Mitchell Kuczynski both picked up assists, and goalkeeper Austin O’Hara had four saves for St. Joseph (4-1, 2-1). Elliott Hare had four saves in goal for Winchester Thurston (1-4-1, 1-2).
Deer Lakes 4, Knoch 0 — Hunter Mravintz had a pair of goals in the first half in Deer Lakes’ nonsection win at Knoch (0-5-1). Danny Gray and Cam Sharkins each had a goal in the second half, and Mark Heim assisted on all four goals.
Burrell 6, Derry 1 — Jacob Grumm and Danny McCarthy each had a pair of goals to help Burrell (1-1, 1-1) cruise to a Section 2-AA win at Derry (1-2, 0-2). Josh Halkias had a goal and three assists for the Bucs.
Freeport 10, Valley 1 — Bryce Hanby, Cole Bennick and Hunter Hardin all scored two goals as Freeport rolled past struggling Valley (0-3, 0-2) in a Section 2-AA matchup. Seth Davis, Ethan Bowser, Kevin Lynch and Robbie Reichenbaugh scored for Freeport (4-0, 3-0). Hanby added three assists while Hardin and Reichenbaugh tallied two.
Highlands 2, Indiana 2 — The Golden Rams (1-2-1, 1-1-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit with second-half goals by Layne Seskey and Ethan Gillette to earn a tie against Indiana (0-3-2, 0-1-1) in a Section 1-AAA game. Highlands goalkeeper Gabe Anthony made nine saves.
Kiski Area 3, Latrobe 1 — Collin Joyner scored twice and added an assist as Kiski Area downed section rival Latrobe and the Cavaliers remained atop the Section 4-AAAA standings. Reed Ziemianski added a goal and two assists, and Drake Neuman and Joyner added assists for Kiski (2-3, 3-0). Goalkeeper Nick Bisceglia had eight saves for the Cavs. Marshall Kalding scored for Latrobe (1-4, 0-3).
Apollo-Ridge 7, Winchester Thurston 2 — Ashtyn Baustert scored a hat trick and Bre Murray had two goals in Apollo-Ridge’s nonsection win over Winchester Thurston (2-2). Elizabeth Ross and Mayce Anthony both added a goal for the Vikings (3-0).
Burrell 5, Deer Lakes 0 — Morgan Weeter, Skylar Dale, Shayna Vicker, Bridget Terranova and Allison Vescio all had a goal for Burrell (3-2, 2-2) in a Section 2-AA win over Deer Lakes (1-2-1, 0-2).
Burrell 228, Riverview 251 — Tiger Hubbard shot a season-best 4-over 39 to lead the Bucs to a Section 1-AA win at Hill Crest Country Club.
