It's been 25 years since the Pirates last won the World Series, and each week, Baseball Sunday will take a look back at the week that was in 1979: June 28, vs. New York (0-1) The Mets won both games at Three Rivers Stadium, finishing off the two-game sweep with a 3-2 win. John Stearns provided the deciding hit with a homer off Jim Bibby (3-2) in the seventh inning. June 29-30, vs. Montreal (1-1) The Pirates played host to the first-place Expos for a weekend series. In the opener, the Pirates won, 6-5. Bill Robinson (No. 18) and Lee Lacy (No. 3) hit back-to-back homers off Bill Lee as part of a three-run first. Tom Hutton hit a three-run homer off Bruce Kison (4-4) in the sixth to pull the Expos to within a run, but Enrique Romo and Kent Tekulve (save No. 10) pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The Expos won the next game, 5-3. Andre Dawson went 3 for 5 with a home run to lead Montreal. The final game of the series was postponed because of rain. July 2-4, at St. Louis (3-0) The Pirates opened a four-game series at Busch Stadium with a 5-4 victory. Foli broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh with an RBI single that drove in Omar Moreno. Newly-acquired Bill Madlock went 2 for 4 with a run in his Pirates debut. The Pirates won the next night, 4-1. Dave Parker had three of the Pirates' eight hits, including a solo homer (No. 14) off Bob Forsch in the third. The Pirates won their third straight the next afternoon, 6-4. Willie Stargell went 3 for 4 with two homers (Nos. 13-14).
