Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has ordered the 11 security forces merged into just three major units, an official Palestinian statement said Friday. The statement said that Abbas issued a series of instructions following a meeting held in Ramallah on Thursday with Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia, Interior Minister Nasser Yusef and top security chiefs. The security services will be under the general control of the interior minister and will be: national security, which could form a basis for a future Palestinian army; general security, which includes uniformed police, and intelligence. Palestinian security sources said that Abbas ordered the security chiefs to present as soon as possible the names of all registered police and security officers, including those fully employed and others who are on call. About 57,000 people serve in the security services, according to the daily Ha'aretz. Abbas also reiterated that the minister of interior will be the only official authorized to make contacts and official statements to the mass media, as well as contacts with any other country. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
