About Cardinal Adam Maida
- Born March 18, 1930, in East Vandergrift, Westmoreland County. Oldest son of Sophie Cieslak Maida and the late Adam Maida, who immigrated to the United States from a rural area near Warsaw, Poland. Sophie Maida, 96, lives in Scott.
- Two younger brothers, the Rev. Thaddeus Maida, parochial vicar at Holy Child Parish, Bridgeville; and Daniel, who lives in the Presto area of South Fayette.
- Attended public schools in East Vandergrift and Scott. He spent his last two years of high school at St. Mary's High School in Orchard Lake, Mich., which specialized in helping children of Polish descent. Maida graduated in 1948.
- Attended St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake and St. Vincent's College, Latrobe, where he graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy.
- Graduated with a licentiate in sacred theology from St. Mary's University, Baltimore, 1956.
- Ordained to the priesthood at St. Paul Cathedral, Oakland, May 26, 1956.
- Received a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome, 1960.
- Received doctorate in civil law from Duquesne Law School, Pittsburgh, 1960. Admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, the Federal Bar in Western Pennsylvania and the U.S. Supreme Court.
- Served as an associate pastor, vice chancellor and general counsel for the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese.
- Assistant professor of theology at La Roche College, adjunct professor of law at Duquesne.
- Ordained and installed as ninth bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wis., Jan. 25, 1984.
- Named Archbishop of Detroit, May 7, 1990.
- Named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II on Oct. 30, 1994.
- Elevated to the College of Cardinals, Nov. 26, 1994.
- Current appointments in the Roman Curia — Congregation for Catholic Education, Congregation for the Clergy, Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, Commission for the Supervision of the Institute for Works of Religion.
