The Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School is offering a number of adult education programs ranging from automotive repair to floral arranging. The school is located at 65 Lewis Run Road in Jefferson Hills.

The Steel Center AVTS includes students from the Clairton, Duquesne, Elizabeth Forward, South Allegheny, Steel Valley, West Mifflin, South Park, Baldwin, Bethel Park, Brentwood and Thomas Jefferson school districts.

The classes being offered are:

  • Small Engine Repair II — Get the lawn mower and weed whacker ready for the spring. This course will show how to repair your lawn equipment to achieve maximum performance at a minimum cost. Runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Friday from Sept. 27 to Nov. 1. Limited to 10 students.

  • Selling/Purchasing Items from eBAY — This course will demonstrate how to sell items and how to bid on items. Runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 1, 8 and 15. Limited to 12 students.

  • How to Build a Computer — Want to show how to build a computer• Runs from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Class size is limited to 10 students.

  • Introduction to the Internet — Will explain and show how to navigate the Internet and the World Wide Web. Runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 11 and 14. Limited to 12 students.

  • Healthy Cooking — An introduction to basic healthy cooking. Will show how to read labels, plan menus and cook low-fat and low-sodium meals. Runs from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to Oct. 16. Class size limited to 10 students.

  • Floral Arranging — These seasonal workshops can be taken separately or as a package deal. These courses are for beginners in floral design. Participants will make live, dry, silk and holiday floral arrangements. Halloween class is from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 3. Thanksgiving class is from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 7. Christmas class is from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 5.

  • Auto Mechanics — This one-night course will teach how to change tires and oil filters, check fluids and connect jumper cables. The class is scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 21. Class size is limited to eight students.
