A discount grocery store will be the main tenant in the Crossroads Plaza expansion. The store, Aldi, sells mostly its own brand items at steep discount, though it limits its selections to 1,000 items and usually just one variety of each. The store will have 15,000 square feet of sales space which Saxonburg Division vice president Brent Laubaugh calls a standard prototype for the chain. The store will be part of a 17,000-square-foot addition to Crossroads Plaza and will probably open by November, Laubaugh said. He said he isn't sure how many jobs the store would create because the opening is still months away and there is no standard number of personnel for an Aldi's market. "We can't make that determination until we open and see what kind of volume we will get," he said. The chain, based in Germany, has more than 800 stores in the U.S. and more than 5,000 worldwide. There are 28 stores in Western Pennsylvania, including Penn Hills and Monroeville. Six houses, including some former houses that were converted into businesses, were demolished to clear the way for the addition at the end of the small shopping center at Leechburg and Craigdell roads. Aldi will be next to Prizant's carpeting, the largest current tenant. Developer Steven Arciuolo bought the six buildings immediately adjacent to the strip shopping center in November 2005. Most of the previous tenants vacated last year. Construction is being handled by Moret Construction of New Kensington. Two entrances to the plaza will be relocated. The shopping center's sign will be replaced, and a sidewalk will be installed the entire length of the plaza. The parking lot will be moved back from the curb to accommodate the sidewalk. Existing businesses in Crossroads Plaza will remain open during construction. Charlie Ban can be reached at cban@tribweb.com.
