Six Algerian prisoners held at the U.S. military base of Guatanamo, Cuba, were severely tortured, their lawyer said in a letter to Pentagon. Algerian French-language daily Le Jeune Independent said Wednesday the lawyer complained to the Pentagon his clients were mistreated and tortured since they were seized by CIA agents in Bosnia in 2002. The six Algerians were first arrested by Bosnian police in October 2001 on charges of planning to bomb the U.S. and British embassies in Bosnia. But the judicial authorities released them in January 2002 after which they were captured and transferred to Guantanamo Bay. The lawyer said in his report the fingers of one of the detainees were crushed while the others were beaten with clubs and forced to take off their pants during prayer. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
