Alle-Kiski roundup: Freeport baseball team downs 1st-place Deer Lakes
Freeport junior Nathan Pastorek did everything but sell programs at the gate Tuesday at Deer Lakes.
“He had one heck of a day,” Freeport baseball coach Chris Graczyk said.
Pastorek pitched a four-hitter and struck out 13, and went 3 for 4 with three doubles and three RBIs as Freeport thumped first-place Deer Lakes, 10-1, in a Section 5-AAA game.
Kris Keppel hit an inside-the-park home run for Freeport (3-3, 2-3), which spotted the Lancers (7-4, 5-1) four runs in the first inning. Scott Ventura had two hits, including a double, for Deer Lakes.
Knoch 6, Hampton 4 — Chris Law induced a popup with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to preserve a Section 5-AAA victory for Knoch (9-1, 6-1). Alex Stobert pitched 6 2⁄3 innings and carried a no-hitter through four innings. Alex Gust had a two-run double in the seventh for Hampton (4-4, 3-4).
Kittanning 4, Indiana 0 — Kittanning pitcher Andy Fennell struck out eight as the Wildcats (5-3, 4-2) downed Indiana (5-4, 4-2) in a Section 2-AAA game. Sam Kiebler went 2 for 3 with a double, and Zane Dudek went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for Kittanning.
Riverview 9, Springdale 5 — Riverview scored five runs in the fifth inning and downed Springdale (2-5, 1-3) Section 4-A game. Shayne Sleberich (4-0) pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts. Brandon Davis went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Will Medved added two hits and two RBIs for the Raiders. Austin Kline went 2 for 3 for Springdale.
Ford City 6, West Shamokin 3 — Blake Bower had three RBIs in Ford City’s Section 3-AA win over West Shamokin (1-4, 1-3). Caleb Zablocki had three hits, and freshman pitcher Josh Leighton struck out six for Ford City (2-4, 2-2).
Deer Lakes 13, Kittanning 3 (6 inn.)— Deer Lakes (9-1, 6-0) trailed 2-1 entering the third inning but scored eight runs across the next two innings in the Section 3-AA win. Maria Taliani homered and drove in three, and Shae Robson and Rachel Tanilli had three hits. Breanna McGaughey singled twice for Kittanning (6-3, 5-3).
Knoch 15, Oakland Catholic 3 (5 inn.) — The Knights used an 11-run fifth inning to roll past Oakland Catholic (0-5, 0-4) in a Section 5-AAA. Cecelia Knappenberger struck out 10 in a two-hitter for Knoch (7-5, 4-2). Chandler Krelow went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, and Avery Keller went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Knights.
Freeport 13, Apollo-Ridge 2 — Freeport (6-1, 6-1) cruised past Apollo-Ridge (1-5, 1-4) in Section 3-AA as Jess Kelley struck out seven. Kristie Radvan went 2 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs, and Claire Crytzer had three RBIs for Freeport. Theresa Desimone and Mariah Laird went 2 for 3 for the Vikings.
Track and field
Another record for Scherer — For the third time this season, Burrell sophomore Nikki Scherer broke a school track record. This time it came in the 100 during a home meet against Valley. She ran a time of 11.89 seconds to better Kami Kaczanowicz’s mark of 12.03 from two years ago. Scherer broke the 200 and 400 records earlier in the season.
