Kittanning committed eight errors Monday, but a timely miscue by Valley allowed the Wildcats to win.

Ali Bowers scored the winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning as Kittanning (2-0, 1-0) beat Valley in extra innings in both teams’ Section 3-AA opener.

Bowers was on first base when Maggie McCanna bunted. Valley committed one error on the throw to first, and Bowers scored on another miscue when the ball was thrown back in. The Wildcats and Vikings combined for 12 errors.

Meg Toy tripled in three runs for Kittanning, which had 17 hits. Bowers, Maddie Veri and Breanna McGaughey all had three hits for Kittanning, while Alexis Adams doubled and was the winning pitcher.

Alyssa Ruffini and Megan Jackson both doubled for Valley (0-2, 0-1), while Allie Aftanas had three hits.

Highlands 2, Indiana 1 — Center fielder Nikki Meanor threw the would-be tying run out at the plate to end the game as the Golden Rams (1-0, 1-0) edged Indiana (0-2, 0-1) in a Section 5-AAA contest. Katie Grosholz pitched a complete game for Highlands, scattering eight hits and three walks while striking out six. Lauren Torgent and Emily Cochran each had run-scoring singles in the fourth inning for Highlands.

St. Joseph 10, Springdale 1 — Anna Swierczenski pitched a complete game, striking out 11, as St. Joseph (1-0, 1-0) beat Springdale (0-1, 0-1) in a Section 3-A opener. Serena Edger had three hits, including a double and triple, while Calley Neelan doubled for the Spartans. Taylor Landis had two hits, including a double, for Springdale.

Plum 12, Allderdice 2 (5 innings) — Rachael Adamski hit a three-run homer as Plum defeated Allderdice in Section 2-AAAA play. Jessica Bitsura struck out eight to earn the win. Keri Bellisario had three hits and drove in three runs for the Mustangs (1-1, 1-0), while Rayna Donatelli added three hits and two RBIs.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 5, Riverview 3 — Sadie Buchser tripled and drove in two runs for Riverview (0-2, 0-2) in a Section 3-A defeat. Alayna Derzak pitched a complete game for North Catholic (2-0, 1-0) striking out 10. Derzak also homered and doubled for the Trojanettes. Kasey DeRiggi had three hits for the Raiders and Hannah Larkin doubled.

West Shamokin 6, Ford City 2 — Steph Schrecengost pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run, to earn the win as West Shamokin defeated Ford City in Section 3-AA play. Leah Baum doubled and drove in two runs for West Shamokin (2-0, 2-0). Karlee Smith tripled for Ford City (0-2, 0-2).

Connellsville 10, Kiski Area 4 — Connellsville scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away from Kiski Area (0-2, 0-2) in Section 1-AAAA action. Jesse Simendinger and Montana Churma doubled for Kiski Area. Victoria Culver had two doubles for Connellsville (2-0, 1-0).


Deer Lakes 10, Highlands 2 — Jake Spirnock’s first-inning grand slam jump-started the Deer Lakes offense in a Section 5-AAA win over Highlands (0-2, 0-1). Zach Lubick pitched six innings and struck out nine to earn the win. Lubick also had two hits and drove in two runs for the Lancers (3-1, 1-0).

Kiski Area 7, Burrell 0 — John Bowser pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and striking out seven as Kiski Area (3-0) picked up a nonsection win. Jon Fink and Brian Komoroski both doubled and drove in a run for the Cavaliers. Burrell (1-1) committed eight errors in the game.

Apollo-Ridge 5, Riverview 2 — The Vikings (1-1) used a five-run second inning to notch their first win of the year in nonsection play. Brady Neal and Tyler Hill both doubled, scored a run and had an RBI for Apollo-Ridge. Tanner Bierly struck out five in four innings for Riverview.

Fox Chapel 8, Gateway 0 — Zach Burkart tripled and drove in two runs as the Foxes earned their first win of the season in nonsection action against Gateway (0-2). Josh Kieffer doubled twice and Greg Yaksich once for Fox Chapel, while Josh Anderson had three hits. Ryan Humbert pitched six innings in the win for Fox Chapel (1-3).

Derry 7, Kittanning 6 — Sam Keibler had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs, but Kittanning (1-2, 0-1) dropped its first Section 2-AAA contest. Cam Gerhard hit a 3-run home run for Derry (1-1, 1-0) and also earned a save. Noah Spang, Zane Dudek, and Christian Miller all doubled for the Wildcats.

Obama Academy 6, St. Joseph 1 — The Spartans (0-1) were limited to five hits in a nonsection loss. Remere Dyer doubled and tripled and drove in two runs for Obama Academy, while Jacob Beckman had a double and two runs batted in.

Boys tennis

Section singles — Fox Chapel’s Sid Rajupet advanced to the championship match at the Section 3-AAA singles tournament Monday. He will play Central Catholic’s Natoli Farber in the final, which will take place Tuesday.

In Section 1-AAA, Plum’s Carson France made it to the semifinals Monday and will face Franklin Regional’s Rochan Ramesh there Tuesday.

Valley’s Josh Denham and Springdale’s Matt Kern will square off in the Section 3-AA consolation match.
