Allegheny County Council President Rich Fitzgerald formally announced this afternoon he will resign March 7.

The county's Home Rule Charter requires council members to resign if they are seeking another office.

Fitzgerald is running for county executive. Dan Onorato has said he will not seek re-election.

Fitzgerald, who has been on county council since it was formed in 1999, will attend his last council meeting on March 1.

Fitzgerald, 51, of Squirrel Hill, said earlier that he would resign on the day that he filed his petition to run for county executive. The filing deadline for nominating petitions is March 8.
