Allegheny County detective’s parking of car investigated
The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office is investigating what happened when one of its detectives improperly parked his county car at Pittsburgh police headquarters during the Steelers’ AFC Championship Game and later reported it missing, a spokesman said Wednesday.
Detective Tony Hildebrand, a former city officer, was not on official business Sunday when he parked the car at the lot off Western Avenue in the North Side, spokesman Mike Manko said. Manko said the office was investigating what happened to the car and why it was there.
The car has since been recovered, Manko said.
“We’re in the process of reviewing the situation,” he said. “The policy is that county vehicles are not for personal use.”
Hildebrand could not be reached.
Police spokeswoman Diane Richard said Hildebrand parked the car in the lot and later reported it was gone. She said police turned over the matter to the district attorney’s office.
“The county vehicle was parked in our lower parking lot. When the driver came back to retrieve the vehicle, it was gone. There was a miscommunication with the status of the vehicle, which was not stolen. The vehicle was removed by another county detective,” Richard said.
She referred questions to the district attorney’s office.
Richard said the lower lot at headquarters is primarily for police employee parking and their personal vehicles and visitor parking. The lower lot has restricted parking on game days.
