Murdy, 63, will assume the positions July 1 for the specialty metals maker. Currently the executive vice president of ATI, he succeeds interim president and CEO Robert Bozzone. Bozzone will remain chairman.
Bozzone, 68, came out of semi-retirement late last year upon the abrupt departure of former chairman, president and CEO Thomas Corcoran. He came from Lockheed Martin Corp., where he was president and chief operating officer of the space and strategic missile unit.
Corcoran was with ATI only 14 months and succeeded company founder Richard Simmons in May of 2000 as chairman.
ATI, based at Six PPG Place, downtown Pittsburgh, is the parent of Allegheny Ludlum, the nation's largest stainless steel manufacturer. The United Steelworkers of America just ratified a six-year contract with Allegheny Ludlum.
Other ATI units include high-performance metals maker Allvac-Latrobe in Westmoreland County.
In tapping Murdy, the board chose a company veteran, who has been with ATI and its predecessor companies since 1988.
He was chief financial officer from June 1988 to August 2000. He has been a company director for most of that period.
'Jim Murdy is exceptionally well qualified to lead Allegheny Technologies to new levels of growth with improved financial performance,' Bozzone said. 'He has a strong knowledge of our company, its businesses, people and markets, and he has a wealth of experience in executive-level positions with several global business organizations.'
Before joining Allegheny in 1988, Murdy was executive vice president and CFO of Gulf Oil Corp.
