Allegheny Township to spend $311K on road work

Allegheny Township officials are getting ready for summer paving and road maintenance.

Supervisors on Monday night authorized about $311,500 for supplies related to road work such as culverts, grates, pipes, liquid asphalt and various sizes of gravel.

The biggest expense was nearly $165,000 for crushed limestone and gravel to be provided by Hansen Aggregates Inc. of New Kensington.

The township's public works department will first finish Victor Drive and Phillips Lane — leftover projects from last summer — before developing a priority list for roads to tackle this summer.

Public works director Steve Kanas is hoping a grant is approved to pave Willowbrook Road.

Kanas presented to the supervisors a slide show illustrating how much aggregate — gravel — prices have risen in the last 10 years.

For instance, what's known as No. 8 stone has risen from $11.78 per ton in 2001 to $30.20 per ton this year, while money budgeted for the 62 miles of township roads has stayed stagnant during the past several years.

In other business

• Supervisors moved the May agenda meeting from May 9 to May 10 at 7 p.m.

• Christopher Clark was appointed to the planning commission, filling the remainder of a term that ends in December 2015.

Dr. Daniel Kupas will represent the township on the Lower Kiski Ambulance Service board.

• April 28 will kick-off "Operation Cleanup Month" in the township.

Residents who didn't receive a flyer listing items that can be collected for recycling or disposal can contact the township office at 724-842-4641 for details.

Items can be brought to the Hyde Park Plaza parking lot near the Pizza Hut on April 28, May 12 and May 26.

Recyclable items will be collected by Dave Bracken of David's Recycled Pallets. The township will receive half of the money that Bracken receives for sells to recycling firms at the end of the year.
