Almost 25 pounds of gold seized in Russia

Russian police have confiscated almost 25 pounds of gold in a 24-hour period.

An unemployed man was detained near Magadan and police officers found almost 20 pounds of ore-grade gold worth about $125,000, reported the Novosti, the Russian government news agency Monday.

In addition, police in Yakutia conducted an operation near the village of Ust-Nera and detained an individual who worked at a mining plant. He was found to be carrying almost 5 pounds of industrial gold worth about $36,000, police said.

Trafficking in precious metals and stones has risen 40 percent in the Eastern Federal District than in the same period last year.
