American Eagle Outfitters Inc.'s sales slowed in July to $232.8 million, down from $233.9 million for the comparable four weeks last year.

Same-store sales declined by 7 percent for the month, compared to a 6 percent decrease a year ago.

For the second quarter ended Aug. 2, the South Side-based clothing retailer said total sales were $688.8 million, compared to $703.2 million for the same period in 2007. Same-store sales were down 9 percent for the period from a year ago.

Due to July's results, the company expects second-quarter earnings per share of 28 cents, compared to 37 cents a year ago. The previous forecast was 28 to 30 cents.
