Thread can be used for more than sewing.
A strand becomes a tool for removing unwanted hair from the face and body. Threading is an ancient and innovative hair-removal process. Believed to have originated in Turkey, it is popular in India and the Middle East, and is one of the oldest methods of hair removal.
Miracle Eyebrows recently opened inside Ross Park Mall, joining the short list of salons and spas that offer the service. Licensed professionals perform this fast-growing beauty trend from eyebrow shaping to removing unwanted hair on other areas of the face.
Threading is less painful and less expensive than waxing, says Jennifer Menhorn, aesthetician at Miracle Eyebrows. It doesn't leave as bright a red mark on the skin and lasts just as long between treatments. The service costs $14 for eyebrows and $39 for a full-face treatment.
This depilation treatment removes all hair from the follicle, leaving behind smooth skin, she says.
"It is less painful than waxing," says Rose Hoerr of Ross after a recent treatment. "I would come back again."
Brittney Easley, a client from Garfield, agrees.
"It didn't take that long at all to do my brows," she says. "I wasn't sure about it at first, because I thought it would hurt. But once I tried it, it was only like a pinch."
The process uses a 100-percent cotton thread. Part of the thread goes into the mouth of the person performing the technique. He or she uses both hands to create a loop that goes across the eyebrow in a sweeping fashion, pulling hairs as it moves along.
"This technique has been around for centuries, but it is really a hot new trend right now," says Eleanor Langston, beauty editor for Self magazine. "We are seeing threading in salons and spas across the country. It is a more precise technique, because you can pick the hair you want to pull out versus a strip in waxing that removes several at the same time. It also allows you to shape the brow in a more exact way."
Threading is closer to tweezing than waxing because it is a more precise technique, says Ning Chao, senior beauty editor for Marie Claire.
"It's worth a try, but make sure you get a recommendation from a friend or see the technique performed at a reputable place, because it takes some practice to be able to do threading correctly," Chao says. "But it is popular, because we are seeing it make its way across the country."
