Area athletes shine at county track meets
Several area athletes turned in fine performances at the Fayette County Coaches Association and Westmoreland County Coaches Association track meets on Saturday.
At Laurel Highlands High School, the Connellsville boys retained their title by winning with 191 team points. Scott Jones won the 110 hurdles (14.96 seconds) and long jump (19 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and took second in the high jump (5-10). Aaron Meade set a new meet record with a first-place mark in the triple jump (43-3). Rodney Richter was named the Field MVP with wins in the shot put (50-1) and the discus (158-3). Joe Villaneuva took first in the 800 (2:07) and second in the 1600 (4:50).
Arlo Helms finished second in the 3200 (10:34) and third in the 1600 (4:53). Aaron Hixson took fourth in the 400 (54.0) and the 200 (23.7). Dan Martin nabbed third in the discus (121-9) and the shot put (39-9) and finished sixth in the javelin (121-3 1/2). Nick Zurawski took third in the pole vault (12-0) and Jarrett McCutcheon placed third in the 200 (23.6). Jason Pirl finished second in the 400 (52.6), and Richie Miller placed second in the long jump (19-8 1/2). Drew Adams (43.1) and Devin Nudo (44.7) placed second and fourth in the 300 hurdles. Nathan Richter took fourth in the 3,200 (10:56), and Nick Miller notched fourth in the 800 (2:09). Anthony Gailey placed fifth in the discus (108-2).
Ricky Baronie, McCutcheon, Jones and Richie Miller finished second in the 400 relay (46.4). Nick Miller, Helms, Zurawski and Villaneuva earned second in the 3,200 relay (8:34). Adams, Hixson, Pirl and Villaneuva finished second in the 1,600 relay (3:39).
On the girls side, Jenna Luczka placed fifth in the 800 (2:37) and fourth in the 400 (1:06) to help the Lady Falcons take third with 43 points. Kayla Barkley was second in the discus (85-9) and sixth in the shot put (25-7). Amanda Villaneuva was second in the 300 hurdles (52.5), and Ashleigh Eutsey placed third in the high jump (4-8).
Luczka, Lacie Rosensteel, Savana Koontz and Villaneuva finished third in the 1,600 relay (4:48). Brittany Simpson, Koontz, Villaneuva and Courtney McClain took second in the 400 relay (54.3).
Laurel Highlands won the girls meet with 231 points.
Breehana Jacobs was named Track MVP with wins in the 100 (11.96), 400 (57.87) and 200 (25.18). Teammate Maressa Guynn won Field MVP honors with victories in the shot put (31-4) and discus (86-8).
Abbey Way earned a combined MVP honor with a win in the long jump (17-3), second-place finishes in the high jump (4-11) and pole vault (10-0) and a sixth-place time in the 200 (27.92) to help the Mt. Pleasant girls team finish fifth overall with 47 points at Latrobe High School. Taylor Funk earned second place in the 300 hurdles (47.30) and the 100 hurdles (15.82) and took fourth in the 100 (13:48).
Southmoreland’s Brittani Eicher took third in the 100 hurdles (17:59), and Hannah Lash notched third in the 800 (2:22), as the Lady Scotties finished 10th with nine points. Alyssa Laird took sixth place in the 100 (13.61). Norwin won the girls meet with 109 team points.
In boys action, Tyler Wadsworth finished fourth overall in the high jump (5-9) to help Mt. Pleasant to an 11th-place finish with 10 team points. Pat Heskey placed fifth in the 200 (24.07). Ethan Keeler took fifth in the triple jump (40-5) and sixth in the long jump (20-1). Kiski won the boys meet with 126 1/2 points.
