Area employers expect steady pace for hirings

Twenty-seven percent of Pittsburgh-area employers expect to hire at a steady pace during the fourth quarter, while 10 percent plan to cut their payrolls, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. About 58 percent of employers surveyed expect to maintain current staffing levels, said Kelly Scott, Manpower spokeswoman at the company’s Robinson office. Employers anticipate staffing levels to be similar to those in the third quarter of 2008, when 29 percent of companies interviewed intended to add workers, Manpower said. Job prospects appear best in the durable goods manufacturing, transportation and public utilities, and wholesale/retail trade sectors, Manpower said.
