An Allegheny County native has been appointed as special agent in charge of the Pittsburgh Field Office of the federal Secret Service.

Eric P. Zahren, a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania who began his career with the Secret Service in 1991, later spent five years in the Presidential Protective Division. He has received numerous commendations, including one in 1994 for his role in the investigation and arrests of conspirators planning to bomb landmarks in New York City.

Zahren, who joined the Pittsburgh Field Office in August 2009, will be responsible for oversight of protective activities in the region. He also will oversee regional criminal investigations, including credit- and debit-card fraud; computer fraud; counterfeiting; and fraudulent schemes associated with the electronic transfer of funds, false identification documents and devices.
