Who's who

North Allegheny senior baseball player Brad Comport

Notable: First baseman Brad Comport hit a walk-off grand slam Wednesday to help the Tigers defeat Hempfield, 11-7, in a nonsection game. Comport, who was the starting middle linebacker for the Tigers, will join Seton Hill baseball team next season.

Describe the situation when you hit the grand slam.

There were two outs, and I was down in the count (1 ball, 2 strikes). The Hempfield pitchers were throwing a lot of curveballs, so I was expecting one. I was trying for a single, but I got the barrel of the bat on it, and I had a good feeling it was gone. The ball sailed over the left-center fence. It's a big thrill because every game matters when it comes to seeding.

Have you ever hit a bigger home run?

Never a walk-off grand slam or home run, but I did hit a game-winning home run in the Colt Eastern Regional final in Hagerstown, Md., in 2007, that sent us to the Colt World Series in North Carolina.

What do you like to do when you're not playing sports?

I enjoy studying American History and hanging out with my friends and family. I particularly like to read about World War II.

What are your impressions of PNC Park and how well do you think the Pirates will do this season?

I got to play at PNC Park, and it was an amazing experience and great atmosphere. As for the Pirates, they have a lot of young talent, and I think they're headed in the right direction.

BY THE NUMBERS

27 — Runs scored by the Norwin baseball team in three Section 2-AAAA victories.

2 — Perfect games Belle Vernon softball pitcher Ashley Nichols tossed last week in defeating Laurel Highlands and Gateway.
