Arrogance most ugly

James Hansen, NASA's top climate scientist and a prelate in the church of global warming, has extracted a pound of flesh from his boss. NASA chief Michael Griffin apologized in a closed meeting with space agency officials for generating controversy when he said in an interview that he was not sure global warming "is a problem we must wrestle with." Mr. Hansen, a darling of the left, was "shocked" by Mr. Griffin's remarks, calling them "incredibly arrogant and ignorant." No, they weren't. Griffin was saying that he personally believes the climate is warming, that climate is always changing, there may be little we can do about titanic natural forces, and who, exactly, decides on the perfect climate. As for scourge Hansen's objectivity, he was a recipient of a quarter-million-dollar grant from Teresa Heinz Kerry's Heinz Foundation. He subsequently endorsed her husband, Sen. John Kerry, for president. But there's more. Last year the prickly Hansen, who has given more than 1,400 interviews, absolutely bristled at the notion he should notify his superiors before talking to the press. This is censorship, he claimed. Yet it didn't stop Hansen from publicly denigrating Griffin. Now, who is the arrogant one• Hansen is not the victim. The victim is science and the right of people to speak their opinions without being hounded by inquisitorial backlash.
