If you are getting ready to go to a baby shower and want to make something unique, then this cake can be a one-of-a-kind gift. Bernice Rothrauff, of East McKeesport, made this artificial two-layered cake from disposable baby diapers and decorated it so cute that it was an instant hit at her granddaughter’s shower. Purchase a pack of newborn diapers that has at least 60 in the pack and a roll of nonallergic first aid tape. Open the first diaper so it is still folded in thirds and start rolling it tight at one end. Continue rolling tightly until you come to the end. Place the end of the second diaper under the end of the first diaper and tape in place. Roll the second diaper around the first one. Continue taping and rolling until you have rolled about 40 diapers together or the bottom layer has formed a 12-inch circle. Place a piece of tape on the last diaper and cut a piece of 2-inch ribbon the circumference of the diapers plus 8 inches and tie the ribbon around the diapers to hold them securely in place. Make a second layer following the directions above using about 20 diapers. The cover is made from fleece to give it a little stretch. The fleece can be white, pastel or a combination of colors. The depth of each layer is 4 inches when newborn diapers are used. Measure the depth if you are using a different size diaper. Measure the tops of each layer, add a 1/2-inch seam allowance, and cut out the fabric for the top of each layer. Measure around each layer, add a 1/2-inch seam allowance to the sides, top and bottom of the top layer. Add a 1/2-inch seam allowance to the sides and top of the bottom layer and a 1 1/2-inch seam allowance on the lower edge. Sew the top side panel together to form a tube. Sew a row of lace 1/2 inch from the top edge on the right side and sew the top circled panel onto the tube. Cut out a circle in the top center of the bottom circle 1/2 inch smaller than the top finished circle. Sew a row of lace 1/2 inch from the center cut edge, clip the seam allowance and sew the bottom of the tube onto the bottom circle. Sew the bottom side panel together to form a tube. Sew a row of lace 1/2 inch from the top edge on the right side and sew the bottom circle onto the tube. Sew a row of lace 1 1/2 inches from the bottom edge. The cover can be decorated with trinkets like the ones shown or with small flowers and ribbons. Personalizing the cake is what will make your cake one of a kind. Place the rolls of diapers inside the cover and place the cake on a firm surface like a lid from a 5-gallon pail. Tuck the bottom edges of the cover under the diapers so that the lace lays on the edge of the lid.
