Aspinwall officials hope to award a new contract for garbage and recycling collection next month.
Solicitor Steve Korbel said the availability of the contract will be advertised this month. Borough officials are looking for a three-year contract with two option years.
Waste Management currently provides the service.
Among the changes proposed for the next contract is a “snow-bird feature.” That would allow residents to suspend billing for up to three months from Nov. 1 to March 31 if they leave the borough for the winter.
Korbel said the next contract also will ask for a discount for residents ages 60 or older.
“That discount will be at the bidder's discretion,” Korbel said.
The new contract also would outline new rules for disposing of electronic waste; white waste, such as appliances; and hazardous waste. Pickup of those items must be scheduled in advance, and they must be picked up at the home, Korbel said.
Korbel said officials could have choices for larger recycling containers. Bids will be received for 14-, 24- and 32-gallon containers. Those containers will have lids and wheels.
“The council has options to decide how they want to go if they want to make a change,” Korbel said.
