Calls mounted Wednesday for an Australian probe into an Egyptian man's claims the country cooperated with Egypt as he was being tortured.
Mamdouh Habib, who was also once held at the U.S. Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba, claims the Australian Security Intelligence Organization provided Egypt with information it could only have found in Habib's Sydney home, such as phone and bank records.
Habib said he was interrogated about names and phone numbers that were seized by ASIO officers during that raid, and his lawyer, Stephen Hopper agreed.
"It's quite clear the Australian government were cooperating with Egyptian intelligence authorities over information they had about Mamdouh," Hopper said.
While the Australian government has denied all the allegations, members from at least three Australian political parties told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. a senate inquiry was the best way to investigate the claims.
