Police are reopening Union Avenue near the Avalon-Bellevue border with the OK of the Allegheny County hazardous materials team, which investigated a report of a gas leak.

People evacuated from nearby homes were being told to return, and crews were flushing the sewers to ventilate the area, Bellevue police said. Some residents had been taken to Northgate High School, but Bellevue police were not sure how many.

A call about a gas smell came from Avalon around 2 a.m., according to a county dispatcher. County officials were not sure if the issue was natural gas or petroleum, but Bellevue police said officials suspected a local gas station.

Avalon police, which headed the response, could not be reached.
