It took heart surgery on a British man for three women to meet at his hospital bedside and learn he was married to all of them.

Melvyn Reed, 58, is serving a 4-month suspended sentence and reportedly in hiding and bankruptcy after being found out, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

His first, and only legitimate wife, 61-year-old Jean Grafton is said to be standing by him at their three-bedroom, $300,000 house in Kettering, Northamptonshire. They married in 1966.

In 1998, Reed married a 38-year-old car sales administrator Denise Harrington.

In 2003 he married for the third time, this time a 53-year-old woman.

The women lived in different parts of England, and none suspected he was living three lives, the report said.

A friend of Reed's third "wife" told the newspaper the portly, bespectacled car salesman didn't look the type.

"He doesn't exactly look like a Romeo," the woman said. "I just can't believe he got away with this. It doesn't seem real."
