Balanced Jeannette rumbles past Laurel
Demetrious Cox has the ability to dominate a game by himself, but Friday, Jeannette used a balanced running game to defeat Laurel, 38-12.
Four different players, including Cox, scored rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks. Cox totaled 40 yards on the ground on 10 carries and completed three of his four passing attempts for 24 yards. Junior fullback Jordan Edmunds paced the Jayhawks with 118 yards, including two long touchdown runs.
Jeannette coach Roy Hall liked the balance his team displayed and said Cox did not have any complaints about not touching the ball as much as usual.
“Cox realizes it’s a team sport,” Hall said. “They (the opponent) can’t key on one person when we play like that.”
Edmunds ran 43 yards for a score in the first quarter to put the Jayhawks on the board. Cox then found the end zone on a 1-yard carry in the second to put Jeannette up, 13-0. Later in the quarter, Shavonta Craft added to the Jayhawks’ lead when he scored from 7 yards out.
Trailing, 19-0, Laurel attempted to get on the scoreboard as the first-half drew to an close. On the last play from scrimmage, Spartans quarterback Brandon Ritchie lobbed a pass down the right sideline that was intercepted by Seth Miller. Miller returned the pass 75 yards, cutting across the field and completing the score by diving across the goal line with no time left on the clock.
Hall praised his team’s effort on the defensive side of the ball in the first half, saying, “I loved everything about it. The coaching staff did a fantastic job with the defense. The defensive line did a fantastic job, too. We call them ‘the backbone.’ ”
Dylan Jones scored both of the Spartans’ touchdowns, rushing 24 times for 126 yards.
Jeannette hosts Waynesburg Central next week, while Laurel returns home to face another tough opponent, Beaver Falls.
