The last few weeks have been very interesting for Devin Hannan, to say the least.
Not only has he been playing basketball for Belle Vernon Area, but he also switched his commitment for college football from Towson University to Old Dominion University.
On Sunday, the BVA senior picked up a huge honor for his gridiron resume. He was picked to play in the Big 33 Football Classic June 20 in Hershey.
Hannan will be part of the Pennsylvania team that takes on an all-star team from the state of Maryland.
“I'm really excited for sure. I'm pretty pumped up,” said Hannan. “I felt confident at first that I would be picked, but then people started telling me how hard it is to get picked. So I figured if I didn't make it I wouldn't be too disappointed.
“But I am glad I did. I think I deserved it.”
He would not get any argument from his coach, Matt Humbert.
“Anything Devin gets, he deserves,” Humbert said. “It's a great honor and it's very exciting.
“From a football standpoint, he is just very nasty,” Humbert added. “He is so aggressive and his work ethic is unmatched. He's very coachable and just an amazing kid. As coaches, we just felt lucky to have him.”
Hannan (6-4, 270) follows former BVA standout Dorian Johnson, who also played in the game in 2013 before beginning his career at Pitt.
Also like Johnson, Hannan made the Big Nine All-Conference First Team on both offense and defense his senior year as an offensive and defensive lineman.
Hannan said that he expects to play offensive line at ODU.
Why did he switch his commitment from Towson to ODU?
“My original decision with Towson was solid,” he said. “I had a great relationship with the coach there. But I made an official visit to Old Dominion. It's a Division I school and it was a really tough decision for me to switch. But I think overall I made a decision that is better for me in the long run.”
The Big 33 Football Classic is one of top high school all-star games in the country and has been played since 1957. The Pennsylvania team features 34 seniors (kickers were added to the original 33-player rosters).
Other former BVA players to participate in the Big 33 include Jim Bair (1956), Gene Belczyk (1969), Bill Contz (1979), Marlon McIntyre (1981), Craig Fayak (1990), Scott McClintock (2001) and Jon Fowler (2003).
Some other notable alumni to play in the game include Pro Football Hall of Famers Herb Adderley, Joe Namath, Tony Dorsett, Joe Montana, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino and Curtis Martin.
Others to play in the game are Super Bowl champions Ben Roethlisberger, Rick y Watters, Orlando Pace, Marvin Harrison, Marlin Jackson , Mario Manningham and Darnell Dinkins.
