There was a quick and heavy volume of fire. And then LTC Kurilla was shot. Kurilla was running when he was shot, but he didn't seem to miss a stride; he did a crazy judo roll and came up shooting. BamBamBamBam! Bullets were hitting all around Kurilla. The young 2nd lieutenant and specialist were the only two soldiers near. Neither had real combat experience. AH had no weapon. I had a camera.

As U.S. casualties in Iraq continue to mount and skepticism in the war grows stronger every day, President Bush tells veterans' groups there can be no retreat and no surrender. Meanwhile, Disney releases "Valiant," a so-called family film that trumpets the honor and glory of battle so much so that it's like watching a recruitment film for the U.S. military. So much for Hollywood's supposed liberalism.

It is not a surprise that at the same time the lawmakers voted themselves a raise, they voted for a fiscal year 2005-06 state budget of $24.27 billion, representing a 6.1 percent increase in spending over the previous state budget of $22.87 billion. Since Gov. Rendell took office in 2003, despite a legislature controlled by the party of limited government, low taxes, and fiscal responsibility, spending has increased 18 percent.
