Bethel Park community responds to family's need for help with medical bills

Friends and family of Michele Gallucci Falcone will hold a fundraiser Sept. 9 to help the mother of four pay some of the medical bills she's accumulated over nine years of fighting cancer.

“I can't believe how Bethel Park has come together to do this for me and my family,” said Falcone, 43, of Bethel Park. “The way this community has pulled together has been unbelievable.”

Falcone was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 but battled the cancer into remission. Two years ago, it came back.

The fundraising dinner, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Department on Brightwood Road, was organized by Kim Gmiter and Jaime Lewis, friends Falcone made through her kids' football, lacrosse and baseball teams.

“The main reason we wanted to do this fundraiser is because we love Michele and the entire Falcone family,” said Lewis. “They are one of the most interesting, entertaining, giving, special families you will ever meet.”

Proceeds from ticket sales — $10 each for adults, $5 for children — will go to the Michele Gallucci Falcone Cancer Fund at Brentwood Bank on Brownsville Road.

Her children — Joey, 19, Annie, 16, Johnny, 14, and Mikey, 13 — have lived with her cancer for most of their lives, Falcone said. Her friends and mother help her with chores around the house or with cooking when her treatments leave her too tired.

“I can't do all the things I want to do,” Falcone said. “It hurts sometimes, to not be the mom I want to be.”

Falcone is working with Magee-Womens Hospital in trying a new drug for her chemotherapy, which she receives once every three weeks.

She said she hopes to attend the fundraiser but isn't certain because chemotherapy weakens her immune system, making her susceptible to infection.

For more information on the fundraiser, call Gmiter at 412-983-1137 or Lewis at 412-443-7295.
