Bicentennial events planned
Ohio Township will kick off its bicentennial celebration Sunday night.
The festivities start at 7:30 p.m. next to the pavilion at the Ohio Township Community Park, which still is under construction and is scheduled to be finished next year. The park is at the intersection of Nicholson and Mt. Nebo roads.
Local disc jockey Tom Butler will be featured at the event. There will be a performance from 8 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. by the Sherri Richards Band. Richards is a Pittsburgh-based acoustical rock and blues singer.
There will be free food and drinks during the festivities, which are being paid for by Ohio Township, said Jennifer Drake, recreation director for the Avonworth Shared Recreational Services Association.
There will also be a clown-magician at the event.
About 9:30 p.m., the festivities will end with a fireworks display.
Sunday’s event is a prelude to a much larger day-long event that is scheduled for Aug. 9, 2003, when the township will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its founding.
“This year’s event is a small two-hour preparation for a celebration next year that will go on all day,” Drake said.
Events for next year have not been scheduled, Drake said.
By next summer, work on the park will be complete. It will include a soccer-football field, a nature center and an amphitheater.
