Big waist at PSU

"Political filmmakers visit PSU," the Oct. 22 article about Michael Moore's visit to Penn State (in which, I was quoted), really missed the point.

The problem with Moore's visit has nothing to do with free speech, but everything to do with the funding of his visit.

Your article would have the reader believe that because the relatively unknown conservative radio talk show host Mike Gallagher was appearing at a small campus venue at the same time as Moore took the stage at the massive (15,000 seats) Bryce Jordan Center, there was some balance.

This is a wrong impression, since Moore's appearance was funded by thousands of dollars in University Park Allocation Committee (UPAC) money ($34,000 total cost; $15,000 for him), and Mike Gallagher received no funding from the UPAC.

Which raises these questions: How much money does the UPAC control• What percentage of the total UPAC dollars is the Moore funding• And how does that percentage compare with any dollars used to fund conservative voices•

Frankly, I think Penn State students and state taxpayers deserve a complete accounting and breakdown of funding recipients.
