Donegal Township
Pair charged
in 2007 burglary
A Unity man and Connellsville woman have been charged in a 2007 burglary at a Donegal Township restaurant in which a safe containing $5,000 was taken.
Joshua L. Lopes, 22, of 41 Smolleck St., Whitney, and Jaycee D. Reese, 21, of 202A E. Green St., Connellsville, were charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy, receiving stolen property and theft by state police in connection with a Dec. 12, 2007, break-in at the Tall Cedars Restaurant. Trooper James McKenzie said Reese had worked as a cook at the restaurant.
Lopes and Reese, who lived together at the time of the burglary, were experiencing money trouble and were "becoming addicted to heroin," according to court documents.
The pair went to the restaurant when it was closed with the intent of stealing a cash register, but when no money was in the register, they took the safe, according to court records. Police said Lopes used a sledgehammer and crowbar to open the safe.
"Lopes related that the two had purchased pills, marijuana and a new bed (with the money taken)," McKenzie said in court documents.
Police said the safe was dumped on Paul Goode Road in Unity.
Lopes and Reese were released on their own recognizance pending preliminary hearings Aug. 21 before Ligonier District Judge Denise Thiel.
Wharton Township
Autopsy results of
pilot released
A Nevada pilot killed in a helicopter crash in Wharton Township last week died from multiple blunt force trauma to his head, torso and extremities, according to the Fayette County Coroner's Office.
Jonathan Todd Kidd, 33, of Las Vegas, was killed July 22 when the helicopter crashed in a field along Kirby Road in Forbes State Forest.
Forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht conducted the autopsy on Kidd.
His official cause of death is still pending toxicology tests, a spokeswoman for the coroner's office said.
Kidd was hired by Houston-based Geokinetics Inc. to deliver supplies to crews performing seismic survey work for Dominion Transmission Inc.
State police and other officials at the scene last week were investigating whether Kidd, who was shuttling supplies to crew members on the ground, lost control of the helicopter because the attached basket became tangled in trees.
Investigation into the crash by the National Transportation Safety Board continues.
In most cases, nine months to a year, the board will release a detailed factual report on a crash, including witness statements, autopsy and toxicology reports on the helicopter's occupants, the maintenance records and the pilot's flying history and medical records.
That report will be forwarded to a five-member safety board for review, and they will make an official determination of the cause of the crash.
