Rapper 50 Cent and rockers Green Day led the pack with six trophies each at the 2005 Billboard Music Awards in Los Angeles. 50 Cent captured artist of the year and album of the year Wednesday for “The Massacre” while Green Day was named rock artist of the year and had rock song of the year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” Billboard.com reported. Mariah Carey won five awards, while “American Idol” Carrie Underwood and Shakira each took home three. Gwen Stefani was named the new artist of the year for her solo debut, “Love.Angel.Music.Baby” and her single “Hollaback Girl” was the digital song of the year. Toby Keith won country artist and country album of the year awards while Daddy Yankee took two trophies as well, including top Latin album. Billboard’s Century Award went to veteran rocker Tom Petty and Kanye West received the magazine’s Artist Achievement Award. “When I first came out I was a hot head — I thought I was the greatest,” he said. “I still think I’m the greatest.” The Billboard Music Awards are based on record sales. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
