Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik on Wednesday announced an administrative reorganization of the diocese to relieve priests of some administrative responsibilities so they can spend more time on pastoral duties.

Zubik created four “regional vicariates” to replace the system of 16 pastor-based deaneries to govern the diocese.

“There will be a greater presence for me in our parishes, a greater ability to help overburdened pastors do their jobs, greater church unity, greater collaboration among parishes and a much better way for parishioners to get my ear,” the bishop said.

The reorganization includes the establishment of a new Secretariat for Parish Life and Lay Leadership, as well as an Office for Church Relations.
