Blackhawk ace McKay's scoreless streak ends
With West Allegheny shortstop Tyler Amedure's two-out double Thursday in the third inning of the WPIAL Class AAA championship game at Consol Energy Park in Washington, Blackhawk left-handed pitcher Brendan McKay's scoreless innings streak came to a close.
Amedure's double scored Nic Daigle, who entered the game as a courtesy runner for the Indians' pitcher, Colin Claus. Claus started the rally by pulling a single into left field.
Left fielder Nick Wiethorn moved Scanlon to second with a sacrifice bunt. Scanlon went to third on a fielder's choice before scoring.
McKay's streak of 71 2⁄3 consecutive scoreless innings ranks as the third-longest in U.S. high school baseball history, according to the National Federation of High Schools.
The record is 80 consecutive innings, set by Mississippi's Joey Porter in 1973. Second is 72 1⁄3, set by Florida's Mike Halperin in 1991.
McKay is a Louisville recruit and has not been scored upon since last season.
This spring, he was 7-0 with 101 strikeouts in 45 innings.
He finishes with 10 consecutive shutouts, one shy of the all-time mark.
He went on to give up a second run on center fielder Michael Cummings' single later in the third inning before striking out right fielder Alec Palmer.
McKay gave up a third run when third baseman Jake Cunningham singled home catcher Brandon Pouch.
