Blackhawk ready to hire Bears as new boys hoops coach

Blackhawk has recommended the hiring of Josh Bears as its new boys basketball coach, pending school board approval Thursday.

Bears coached West Allegheny the past 10 seasons, compiling a 127-106 record while qualifying for the playoffs five times. Bears led the Indians to the 2007 WPIAL Class AAA championship as a No. 16 seed.

After winning a play-in game to qualify for the WPIAL tourney, West Allegheny beat No. 1 seed Greensburg Salem, No. 5 Ambridge and No. 3 Chartiers Valley, 62-58, in double overtime, to win the title.

Bears will succeed Andy Hedrick, who left Blackhawk after seven seasons to become assistant principal and boys’ basketball coach at Connellsville. Hedrick and legendary Blackhawk coach John Miller were among the members of the search committee, which interviewed three candidates.

“He had 10 years as head coach at West Allegheny, and each year they got better and better until they were competing in the WPIAL playoffs,” Blackhawk athletic director Jack Fullen said of Bears. “He’s very astute at the game and scouting. Hopefully, he’s got about 25 years left with us.”
