An Indiana County woman's decision not to cash a check from Ireland in exchange for a Jack Russell terrier puppy paid off.

The $3,800 check, forwarded to Cathy Myers of Cherry Tree, turned out to be fake, state police at Indiana said.

The check was allegedly sent by someone from Ireland after that person e-mailed Myers about buying a puppy she was selling. The person sending the check instructed Myers to cash the check, keep the money for the puppy and return the difference via Western Union, police said.

Myers didn't cash the check or send the dog, police said.

Authorities didn't say in a news release how Myers determined the check was bogus, but they warned people to be aware of such scams.
